adidas has today revealed a boot made heel to toe from their revolutionary Primeknit material. The adidas Primeknit 2.0 is the latest update of the original Primeknit boot, launched and worn on pitch last year by Luis Suarez.

The all-new Primeknit 2.0 model brings together two key adidas innovation projects – the original Samba Primeknit boot, and the Primeknit FS (Footy Sock) prototype; which was a “concept” boot presented by adidas in 2014.

Based on the construction insights gained from the Primeknit FS, the Primeknit 2.0 comes enhanced with “compression fit” technology. An all-new compression tongue includes Lycra yarns designed to wrap around the midfoot area and create a maximum lockdown effect. The boot also features a new anatomical heel shape and design, following the natural shape of the back of the foot to provide optimum support.

The forefoot contains a knit structure specifically designed to aid control. The control knit structure offers 3D texture that combines ultimate ball control with unrivalled manoeuvrability and traction by way of the f50 adizero outsole.

The “outer shell” of the Primeknit 2.0 comprises of a zoned knitted upper with a lightweight vacuum coated skin to protect the yarns and retain a soft surface, meaning the boot is at home in any weather, on any pitch.

Discovering that little bit more about a boot, it’s inspiration and design led themes is always great to see. adidas have gone further with a Q&A with the design consultant who worked with the adidas football team to create Leo Messi’s unique Pibe de Barr10 boots.

“I love to think of Leo as an artist, his canvas is the court, brushes are his legs, the ball, his muse, and when he scores… his masterpiece.”Ignacio Valentini

What is the design inspiration behind the Pibe de Barr10 boot?

The entire collection was focussed on the idea of representing the beginnings of Messi’s
football career – his neighbourhood, the streets of Rosario, the square where he used to play, the school. Once we’d individuated the graphic style of each scenario to be narrated with images, we set to work.

140120_Messi_TP_Q2

I asked some friends in Rosario, my home town, to help me out with a photographic shooting of Las Heras’ neighbourhood, where Messi grew up – perspectives, particulars, panoramics – everything that could capture the essence of who until today still remains “un pibe de barrio*” as well as being the best player in the world.

Can you tell us more about the design specifics around Rosario, and how they relate to Leo Messi’s footballing style?

The idea was to create a design which could merge the originality of Leo’s style with the
authenticity of the place where he grew up. Bring to life the roots of the place he was born and raised. And so, his playing style was represented by swift, instinctive , unexpected brushstrokes, as if to imitate the now trademark Messi moves – sudden changes of direction, explosive acceleration or just a masterful touch to take it past another player. No matter whether you are in the defence or behind a camera, you just can´t keep up with his dribbling pattern.

The neighbourhood was represented in the style of street art, reflected in every corner of the streets. The images were reworked with stencils, spray and roll in order to obtain a “street” mood.

I love to think of Leo as an artist, his canvas is the court, brushes are his legs, the ball, his muse, and when he scores… his masterpiece.

What was it like working with adidas and Leo Messi?

It was a pleasure and honour to work with adidas Football for the Pibe de Barr10 apparel and footwear collection for the world’s best player, my fellow citizen Leo Messi.
Thanks to this project, I had the opportunity to work with designers from different countries, from different cultural backgrounds, in an extremely stimulating and creative environment.

How were you initially approached by adidas?

The Head of design of at adidas Football Gerald Kuhtz noticed me and my work. I greatly thank both he and Team Messi for the attention I received during my visit to the adidas Headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Cool to think how these things come about. The imagery is fantastic. Great to see this come to life. Superb boots.

Between gawping and gazing, we were lucky enough to have a hands on opportunity to get to know the latest in the adidas f50 family.

With all the talk about haters. I can 100% I am only a lover of these boots. They may take a little warming too but that’s only because they push the boundaries – another new creative champion amongst the adidas family.

A class act whilst smashing the defence to pieces, these boots are enviable on the eye, solid in the hand and most deadly on the pitch. We’re massive fans of this f50. It took some adjustment but it didn’t take long before we were smitten.

No haters here.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Predator, adidas has already released the Revenge Pack, a heritage set of three Predators based on the original designs of the 1994 Predator, the 1998 Accelerator and the 2002 Mania. With the Crazylight Pack, adidas is bringing ground-breaking lightweight technology to this legendary boot.

Crazylight technology launched in April 2014, with Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale wearing the Crazylight f50 during their successful UEFA Champions League campaign. adidas has dominated the football “lightweight” category since the introduction of the adidas adizero™ f50 in 2010, and that continues with the Crazylight Pack. The new Predator Crazylight weighs just 215g, with the f50,11pro and Nitrocharge boots weighing in at 140g, 180g and 225g, respectively.
