The curtain call on this seasons European football is imminent and a whole bunch of finale’s are on the horizon. Champions League, FA Cup, Europa League, The Premier League, Football League, La Liga, Serie A and so many more up and down the land will reach their conclusion.

Winners will be championed and losers will lamented. The most intense part of the season is upon us.

It’s only fitting that Nike release their ‘Intense Heat Pack’, matching those pressures with warm hues and striking colourways that symbolise the intensity and high pressure of this critical juncture in the season.

All four of the bright uppers are united by the same color-shifting Swoosh. The lenticular effect on the Swoosh creates depth and variance in its color, which will appear prominently purple on the pitch. The cool tones of the Swoosh offset the warm shades of the upper for a stunning contrast in this colorful pack.

Damn hot boots.

Professional players will begin wearing the new colorways this week and the boots will be available on nike.com March 27.

Thanks goes out to one like-minded gent and appreciator of the creative side of the game – Eric Beard for introducing Kendall and myself.

Kendall is a designer based out in the US who was fortunate enough to work with Nike, producing a series of Newspaper headline inspired prints that were used as part of the back drop for a Nike product shoot.

Showcasing the limited edition Neymar JR Golden Hypervenom that he wore in the latter stages of the World Cup, each print uses elements of the Brazilian national team – charting the career path that Neymar has been on.

Beautifully done, I’ve got so much time for these. If the boots were not beautiful enough, then the associating art work tips it to another level. See more of Kendall’s work here.

We’ve been fortunate enough to feature the work of Steve Welsh on a few occasions. Arguably, he is one of the biggest and best names in the creative world of football. Striking up a client list that includes the BBC and adidas to name a couple.

Notably, his work for the BBC for the 2014 World Cup coverage, that was nothing short of incredible. You can see heaps of his delights, here.

On this occasion though, we’re celebrating the completion of his A-Z series of football. Illustrating and designing some of the biggest names to have graced the game, it is the perfect coming together of football and it’s creative offerings.

The adidas #ThereWillBeHaters campaign that has certainly stood out as a campaign that has made its mark on the season – creatively its execution has been grand – splitting opinion all the same – only for positive reasons.

Following a quite remarkable performance against Man City and facing arguably the biggest clash of the titans in the El Clasico one man, Leo Messi is the shining star of the next phase in the campaign.

You cannot argue with the records…

Growing up in Rosario in Argentina, Messi was never expected to make it. Hundreds of people have doubted him; this video celebrates the raw talent that overcame the haters to become the best player in the world.

The new #ThereWillBeHaters video tracks the incredible journey of one of the world’s greatest ever players from the streets of the Barrio of Las Heras, Rosario in Argentina to the record-breaking player he is today.

The video voices many of the criticisms that have faced Messi during his life. The provocative voice over states “You’ll never be good enough or big enough. You’ll never make it with the big boys in the big league. You’ll never leave your little home town”. Pictured standing defiantly surrounded by his many Ballon d’Or and Golden Boot trophies, Leo Messi’s transformation from scrappy kid on the streets of Argentina to the best player in the world is complete. No one got anywhere by listening to the haters.

The #ThereWillBeHaters campaign celebrates the hate at the heart of football. To have “haters” is the ultimate compliment. The best in the world know that great performances deliver “hate” from spectators and from opponents, particularly on social media. This becomes the fuel that drives the confidence to deliver even greater performances. Players like Leo Messi thrive off hate, and they make no apology for doing so.

The video coincides with the launch of the new adidas Pibe de Barr10 boots, made specifically for Leo Messi. The new Pibe de Barr10 were designed in collaboration with Rosario-born graphic artist Ignacio Valenti in a style that pays tribute to Messi’s childhood. Fusing urban-inspired raw brush strokes with polished sleekness on the synthetic hybrid touch upper, the Pibe de Barr10 embodies Messi’s footballing style; beautiful, yet dangerous.

He’s been a much talked after, wonderkid and is now Real Madrid player – Martin Ødegaard has jumped to the fore as Nike launches its first ever home and away kits for the Norwegian National Football Team – equipped with a unique national crest that celebrates national pride, both are tasty additions to the international scene.

“The kits feel great, look modern and yet are very classic designs,” said Martin Ødegaard, Norway’s youngest-ever senior international. “I wear Norway’s colors with great pride and I look forward to getting onto the pitch in the new kits.”

The away kit is white with a V-neck collar, and the lightweight fabric features a subtle checkered pattern. The white away shorts and socks complete the kit’s clean aesthetic.

Nike Dri-FIT technology and engineered mesh material construction help players stay dry and cool on the pitch, increasing breathability and air flow where athletes need it most to help them perform at the highest level.

“The new Norwegian national team kits combine Nike’s design and innovation expertise and our ambition for football in this country,” said Kjetil Siem, Football Association of Norway General Secretary. “This is the first kit that carries the new crest that represents pride, solidarity and strength – common values we share as a football family and as a nation as we look to the future.”

The new Norway home and away kits are available in stores from March 21.

Discovering that little bit more about a boot, it’s inspiration and design led themes is always great to see. adidas have gone further with a Q&A with the design consultant who worked with the adidas football team to create Leo Messi’s unique Pibe de Barr10 boots.

“I love to think of Leo as an artist, his canvas is the court, brushes are his legs, the ball, his muse, and when he scores… his masterpiece.”Ignacio Valentini

What is the design inspiration behind the Pibe de Barr10 boot?

The entire collection was focussed on the idea of representing the beginnings of Messi’s
football career – his neighbourhood, the streets of Rosario, the square where he used to play, the school. Once we’d individuated the graphic style of each scenario to be narrated with images, we set to work.

140120_Messi_TP_Q2

I asked some friends in Rosario, my home town, to help me out with a photographic shooting of Las Heras’ neighbourhood, where Messi grew up – perspectives, particulars, panoramics – everything that could capture the essence of who until today still remains “un pibe de barrio*” as well as being the best player in the world.

*uptown boy

Can you tell us more about the design specifics around Rosario, and how they relate to Leo Messi’s footballing style?

The idea was to create a design which could merge the originality of Leo’s style with the
authenticity of the place where he grew up. Bring to life the roots of the place he was born and raised. And so, his playing style was represented by swift, instinctive , unexpected brushstrokes, as if to imitate the now trademark Messi moves – sudden changes of direction, explosive acceleration or just a masterful touch to take it past another player. No matter whether you are in the defence or behind a camera, you just can´t keep up with his dribbling pattern.

Angle_03_Full Boot_2x1

The neighbourhood was represented in the style of street art, reflected in every corner of the streets. The images were reworked with stencils, spray and roll in order to obtain a “street” mood.

I love to think of Leo as an artist, his canvas is the court, brushes are his legs, the ball, his muse, and when he scores… his masterpiece.

What was it like working with adidas and Leo Messi?

It was a pleasure and honour to work with adidas Football for the Pibe de Barr10 apparel and footwear collection for the world’s best player, my fellow citizen Leo Messi.
Thanks to this project, I had the opportunity to work with designers from different countries, from different cultural backgrounds, in an extremely stimulating and creative environment.

MessiQ2

How were you initially approached by adidas?

The Head of design of at adidas Football Gerald Kuhtz noticed me and my work. I greatly thank both he and Team Messi for the attention I received during my visit to the adidas Headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Cool to think how these things come about. The imagery is fantastic. Great to see this come to life. Superb boots.
